Frequently asked questions

What counts as a "voice minute"?

Time spent in live conversation with Klara or Emma during a Speak session — actual back-and-forth speaking. Listening to vocabulary or drill audio, replaying past conversations, and reviewing your saved corrections do not count toward your voice minute allowance.

Voice minutes are also "active-only" — when you pause to think between turns, the clock pauses too. So your monthly voice budget goes further than the raw clock might suggest.

What about chatting by typing?

Cher's Voice is currently a speaking-first tutor — practice happens out loud through your microphone, not by typing messages back and forth. We chose this because real fluency comes from speaking, not from typing.

What if I hit my voice limit before the month ends?

Plenty keeps working: reading old conversations, replaying past tutor audio, practising your saved vocabulary & corrections, roadmap progress, and insights dashboard. The only thing that pauses is starting a new live Speak session.

You can upgrade your plan in one tap and get more minutes immediately, or wait — voice minutes reset on the 1st of every month.

How do the daily limits actually work?

The "X minutes per day" we show on each plan is the monthly allowance divided by 30 — so it's a guide, not a strict daily limit. Voice minutes are calculated as a monthly bucket: a busy day where you do 60 minutes can be balanced by a quieter day where you do 5. You choose when to use them within the month.

Can I pause or cancel my plan?

Yes — you can cancel anytime. Here's exactly what happens, depending on which plan you're on:

Monthly plan ($20 / $35 / $50 per month): cancel whenever you like. You keep full access until the end of the month you've already paid for, and you won't be charged again the following month. There's no refund for unused days in your current month, but you also have no long-term commitment — you only ever pay for the month you're using.

Yearly plan (15% off, paid up front): you pay once for the full 12 months. If you decide to cancel partway through the year, you keep full access until your 12 months are up, and the subscription simply stops after that with no further charges. We don't issue refunds for unused months on a yearly plan, so it's the right choice if you're confident you'll be practising consistently across the year.

How do I pay? Is Wave Mobile Money the only option?

Wave Mobile Money is our primary payment method, designed for learners in The Gambia. Pricing is displayed in both USD and GMD and the GMD amount updates based on the live exchange rate.

Can I change plans later?

Yes — you can switch plans anytime.

Upgrading: your new plan starts immediately. The bigger allowance and any extra features unlock right away, so you have more time available for the rest of the month. Minutes you've already used aren't reset — they just count against the new, larger cap.

Downgrading: your new plan starts at your next billing cycle, not now. You keep full access to your current plan until then, and the lower price and smaller allowance take effect next month.

Do I need a special microphone or device?

Just any modern smartphone or laptop with a microphone. The built-in mic on a phone is plenty — you don't need a headset. We recommend Chrome, Edge, or Safari for the best voice recognition. The web app also installs as a PWA on your phone for a one-tap home-screen icon.
